Two possible scenarios.

1) The connection at the left taillight signal bulb might be loosen. Open up the panel and check that. Restart the car and see if the error goes away.
2) The bulb might be near the end of its life. You can replace it now. The error should go away.

As the bulb starts flickering, the voltage drops and the iDrive computer monitors these things, which would give warning when it happens. I'm sure someone here might be able to give a more technical explanation than mine.

Check both bulb and socket / connections for any sign of corrosion ... the slightest amount on any connection will trigger an error. Also, the bulb filament may be about to go ... any change, however slight, in resistance will trigger an error message. When the malady is corrected the error message will go away - no resetting necessary!

Thank you for all your input I replace the bulbs and malfunction indicator went away. What was interesting to me was the bulbs had not burn out but when I took out the bulb you could see the it had just start to blacken the bulbs so it was on its way out once again thank you all for your advice

3 years later and the advice people have given is still being put to good use! Love being able to trouble shoot the small stuff and fix the problem.
