seriously, how did you raise your car? I find it very tough to work under a 20" ground clearance, let alone for projects of this magnitude. Having a lift is always my dream.

Ok so I've been waiting on this but I'm about to tackle it in the coming months. Is there any consensus on the zip kits? I know for peace of mind sending it off to be rebuilt is best but just curious about the zip kits.

 

What are you curious about? What consensus? Whether you could do it yourself? You could. It needs a very clean area, and an extreme care and attention because there are lots and lots of fiddly bits - and some stick to the top piece when you take it off. It's important to mark and remember where everything goes.

There are videos of a master doing this on either a 6HP19 or 6HP24 on youtube - so you can see what is involved.

 

i was more curious about if the zip kits actually work and are worth doing vs sending it off to be rebuilt.

 

Installing DIY is doable absolutely, however, you always need to order the correct separator plates as well, because it will almost be certain that you will mess up the thin gasket between plates when you disassemble.

 

Whether I rebuild this one or buy one already rebuilt - what's the diff? :shrug: Better the devil you know than the one you don't. I already had the valve body and solenoids redone, so I was half way there anyway. This way I know what the issues are and exactly what is being done, and which parts replaced (apart from bearings and clutches). I prefer it this way. done by people in whom I have confidence and trust.

 

Right, thanks guys. I was just weighing rebuilding my valve body only (not gearbox yet) with a sonnax zip kit vs sending the valve body off to be rebuilt by a professional. I think I will send it off because it comes with a lifetime warranty. I was wondering if anyone had a positive experience with the valve body zip kits specifically.

 

Just to update - no jolt when coming to a stop. Car drives good, Transmission shifts great.
