Should these be replaced more often than what the iDrive recommends. What's a good interval between changes?
It's so easy to examine the filters to see if they need changing (I check every 2 years). There are so many variables (environment, mileage, etc.)which determine when they need replacing, so that is probably why it is no longer listed in iDrive for LCi models.

The activated charcoal filters adsorb certain impurities .See :-

The ones I got from Ebay are the activated charcoal....I've been noticing I get more smells in than I did with the OE ones though......cig smoke smell, burning brush smell, etc. With the oe filters I never noticed any smells. I probably will switch back to the oe filters next round...or maybe sooner than later

RealOEM.com lists them at $51.60 each.I use Mahle or Mann which are OEM quality and half the price.
You can get them here:-

I have never replaced mine. This is after all not a performance item. I take them out, use my shop vaccum on the exterior side, then blow compressed air against the interior side to get any dust out. I know that activated charcoal has a life, but mine still seem to handle exterior odors just fine. Even the cheap ones seem too damn expensive.

More like ten seconds max. Ha.
