how to pop open and clean the centre high mount stop lamp

just wondering how to open the centre high mount stop lamp housing that is mounted on the rear interior roof of the car. it's got some dust particles and bugs in it. i just need to do a quick wipe.

That's quite easy, just remove / pull the cover and then you have access to the brake light.

i've tried doing this but it seems the actual housing is taped around. not sure if there is another way around it as i dont want to damage the adhesive seal.
