The K&N supplied stuff will work best, but if you want a home made recipe:
Shake the filter well to remove some of the dust and the bigger particles.
Put the filter in enough lukewarm water with a drop of mild detergent added to cover the filter (Fairy Liquid dishwashing liquid is ideal, but I don't know if you can find it in the US; otherwise Woolite). Squeeze and shake the filter a little, then leave to stand for at least a couple of hours. All the gunk should drop to the bottom of the container. Remove, rinse and dry thoroughly. At least 12 hours, ideally 24. Careful with using warm air; some filters are glued and don't like being in a constant flow of warm air. The filter must be bone dry for obvious reasons.
Oil lightly with good quality 2-stroke oil or gun maintenance oil. Squeeze excess oil out. Refit.
Above recipe used for years on motocross engines and on a E36 325i with a K&N, but supplied without warranties.

on the K&N filter upgrade, did you feel any noticeable difference in power or response? Is it worth the upgrade? Thanks for your time.

Yes it is worth the money.
1 more thing on cleaning. I just clean my fillter and the engine slow down with a waroning light saying over power and would not let me move, so I turned off the engine and waited for about 5 min and started again and it was fine.
I got home and took out the air filter and had a look and there I see that the filter did not have that oil in it so I put more oil into the filter and the engine is fine now.
