My HUD was a bit low and after finding the official document detailing how to adjust the height, I set about giving it a go.

Firstly remove the 2 screws holding the central screen in:

Tilt it forwards to take it out:

Looking towards the HUD you will see the arrangement to adjust the height:

Firstly the locking nut has to be loosened (only a few turns of the ratchet). I used a 13mm deep socket.
The adjustment screw is turned using a 6mm socket. You will need some pretty long extensions on the ratchet to reach the nut and screw.

Tighten = Raises the display
Loosen = Lowers the display

And here's some comparison pics,

Before:

After:

Doesn't seem like much from the pictures but it makes a difference when you're sat behind the wheel

Thanks for the illustrations...

The following thread in the FAQ forum contains additional instructions and information about the HUD and it's adjustments:

I can't wait to try this. I've never used my HUD because it seems no matter how I adjust my seat, it's always just out of sight. Thanks for the DIY!

Finally got around to trying this and I can't figure it out, which is crazy since it should be so simple.

Here's the problem:

After I loosen the locking nut, it feels like the 6mm nut just keeps turning and turning and nothing is happening. Almost like it's not connected to anything. Upon every rotation it makes a click and you can see the HUD display shake a bit, so something is happening, but it's not moving the image up or down.

Any ideas?

Hmm - I have done this a couple times and not had what you describe. It should only be about a quarter turn to raise it up a bit. It kinda wants to "snap" into specific new height (which I thought was too high) but I was able to get it to stay in-between just long enough to be able to tighen down the locking nut and it stays in place.

- Make sure you have a #6 and not a #9 socket!

No worries in adjusting it if you wear polorized sunglasses because you won't be seeing it anyway... One would think they would make a HUD that is visible through these type of sunglasses since most are polorized anyway.

great directions, to raise mine I had to loosen it (05 545i) although the socket is stuck on the adjustment screw, ha so I left it, can't even get it off with needle nose plyers, glad I can use the HUD now!

Thanks for this post, this was awesome!!!
Easy DIY, with great results...as stated before the adjustments doesn't seem like much but when you're behind the wheel it makes a big difference.
What a great improvement for comfort!

*for U.S. vehicles: you have to tighten to drop and loosen to raise.

FWIW, I found a 6mm slipping. My 5.5mm was a perfect fit (7/32"). I adjusted it to be useable by a 150cm driver.
