I like my standard 545i SMG wheel WAY better than that M5 wheel.
The M5 wheel has better shape to the grips, but the paddle shifts on the regualr SMG are both operational with one hand. (ie, both can be used to up or downshift)
This is nice if you need to shift up or down, but only have one hand on the wheel. You can't do that with the M5. Left paddle is only for downshift, right only for up.

Just look at an F1 car, the paddles move with the wheel. Granted, they never have to take their hands off of the wheel but with active steering, you don't have to much either. If, for some reason, you're hands are so lost that you can't find a paddle, the gear selector is always in the same place...

Would it be possible only to replace the normal SMG paddles with the M5 SMG paddles? and then rewiring so the paddles work right...

Hobi, I have the sports steering wheel. AFAIK it's the same what is used for SMG.

Having connection problems at the moment and am connecting using dialup

If you have a Steptronic car AND a heated steering wheel, then my mod will NOT work at the moment. I haven't been able to find anyone that I know that has steering wheel heating in the UK, so I can't do any testing/developing. Anyone out there help with this???
E60Speed: The M5 wheel part number (wheel rim ONLY - no trims etc..) - 32.34.2.282.862 ----- the UK cost is ? 361.71 + VAT (17.5%)
The M5 paddles are:
LEFT - 61.31.7.836.557 ------- ? 98.73 + VAT
RIGHT - 61.31.7.836.558 ------- ? 98.73 + VAT
Personally, I have no problems if the levers are on the wheel or the column. My only gripe (and it is only a small gripe) is that BMW should make the levers from metal. I think that on such an expensive car, they could have afforded to get metal levers made. No doubt somebody could do it - if so, let me know

If you have a M Sports steering wheel without the levers in the first place, then NO, you cannot just add the levers. The reason is that such a wheel will not have the cutouts for the body of the lever casings AND there will not be the reshaped curve on the rear of the wheel to accomodate the 'styling' of the lever casings.
If, however, you have an SMG-based E60, then it is physically possble to replace the existing SSG Push/Pull levers with the M5 SMG levers. See my other reply... I'll have a solution for Andy545 and Iceman soon I hope.
