If that's the case then a standard firmware update via dealer or other means may be needed. I'm not sure what firmware Nelson had loaded, but he's quite proactive with upgrading things so I imagine the firmware is newer. When I received the unit, traffic was not enabled. Regarding the disks, I dont know what it was doing, but when I first put it in I was instructed on-screen not to use it for a few minutes, then to restart it. I thought that was an updating of the system but it may just have been POI transfers.

What you need is coding AND a new Nav DVD. Either one alone will not give you traffic info for E60's build before 2007 or possibly last quarter of 2006 (I don't remember the cut-off date).
My build date is 5/2006 and after coding and the 2012 DVDs it works like a charm in Orange County (LA area).
For the life of me, I don't understand why this feature isn't being promoted by our BMW dealers.

I'm using a 6/2004 CCC and a 2009 nav disk and the three coding instructions in the first post did the trick for me earlier this year. You can view the traffic info, it shows up as icons on the map, and if you are on guidance it will attempt to reroute you if there is an issue. Not much use during rush hour, but it works.

Negative on that for the older E60. Alerts come in on one of the FM bands, same as some of the portable GPS units with free "lifetime" traffic. Unfortunately this means that it is fairly limited to major market areas. Therre is an area of Southern California known as the Santa Clarita valley. It's an upscale suburb area within LA county. When driving, alerts wont be downloaded until I get in range of LA market radio stations.

What setting do you all use for the traffic info ("radio station") in LA/OC?. I suspect we all just set it at "Auto". AFAIK that just pulls in the strongest signal - not necessarily the best quality traffic info.
