Scope: Install Vorsteiner Trunk Spoiler
Time to install: ~ 2.5 hours
Difficulty: Novice
My experience doing this: None, so... use this at your own risk.
The Vorsteiner Trunk Spoiler fits the e60 trunk very nicely. It didn't lay perfectly flat on the left and right edges, but with a tiny bit of pressure, fits like a glove.
Preparation materials:
1. 220 sandpaper
2. TSP gloss remover
3. Alcohol based window cleaner
4. 3M Heavy Duty Double-Sided Indoor/Outdoor Tape
5. Loctite Stik-n-Seal
6. Permatex Clear RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant
7. Clean rag
8. Utility knife/razor
9. Masking & duct tape
Fitment:
1. Lay spoiler on trunk and if possible, have someone hold in place.
2. I applied tape on trunk around spoiler edges to show working area.
Instructions:
1. I cleaned the working area with hot water and strong alcohol based cleaner.
*Note:
I felt pretty comfortable that I removed the wax because the surface felt rough compared
to the waxed area.
2. Lay your painted spoiler paint side down on a protective material
3. Lightly sand the underside of your spoiler
* Note:
I avoided doing anything in the center 3" (around the label) Instead of letting water form
a dam on the trunk, I thought I should provide a path for drainage...
4. I only used half of the 3M tape width. Look at the pics closely.
* Note:
The tape is not as thin as glue. Any more tape than I used creates a visible gap on the edges
5. On the trunk/window side, I formed a half ring of the Lock-Tite Stik-n-Seal
6. On the lower trunk side, I formed a glue ring using the Permatex product
* Note:
I used two different types of glue because I wasn't sure which one was the strongest.
Also, I didn't want to use a non-silicone glue in the event I ever needed to remove the spoiler.
7. Be very careful with placement because the 2-sided tape will grab immediately
8. The 2-sided tape does a good job holding everything in place, but I used masking tape
first, followed by another layer of duct tape. The duct tape allowed greater compression.
The pictures are worth a thousand words, and I hope this DIY helps you.
