I just posted instructions from TIS on changing the oil in the Tech Gallery. For some reason, I could only find instructions for the N62 (545i) and M57TU (530d) engines. I imagine the 535d would be similar to the 530d, right? I'm not sure how different the 525i/530i would be from the 545i. If the more current TIS has better information, let me know...

It always seems like the guys who insist on a strick 1200 mile break-in period 'because the manufacturer says so' are the same guys that are eager to do unnecessary oil changes outside of the manufactures recommended guidelines despite the fact that the manufacturer says they aren't necessary.

Think about it-- many if not most of these vehicles are leased, meaning that BMW actually owns them and we buy use of them for 3 years. Don't you think that if they really thought that more frequent oil changes were necessary and would improve engine reliability and reduce engine failure that they would tell us to change the oil more frequently?

Hey, if you are into homeopathic oil changes be my guest

Let us not forget that BMW, and I suppose some other mfrs, only went to these extended oil change recommendations and lifetime rear end fill claims, when they started paying for the full maintenance. Precisely one year earlier their recommendations were at a much more frequent interval. Pretend you are the BMW business manager - what would u do??

I grant u that oils have improved but by that much and the filters as well? I think not. I feel much better DIM in between the dealers requirement. I also get to look things over and get a feel for what's going on with my ride(s). Just like I like to wax my cars so I can see and feel the body and paint. Puts me in touch with my inner self

Makes you wonder if the original oil change recommendations every 3K miles where very conservative to begin with, doesn't it?

Strange thing though, here in SA, change intervals are more like 10 to 12000 km's which is 6 to 7200 miles.
Also, every BMW sold here comes with a compulsory 5 year motorplan covering everything including oil changes meaning that BMW will be paying for these more frequent oil changes.
Oil used here is the same quality as that used anywhere else in the world conforming to the BMW LL standard.

Really? So... I dunno what to ask... why the difference? I still think BMW NA is just being cheap and not changing the oil more frequent. Since it'll cost them a lot more because of the free maintence program.

Perhaps because Streak's car is a diesel, the oil change interval is more frequent than that of gasoline engines.
