I changed the oil back in 5k miles. I posted a writeup in this forum but no pictures though.

I found it :

************************************************** **************
I just did my 5k miles oil change. It took me about 45 minutes due to the first time to change oil in E60. Next oil change will be much less than 45 minutes.

I drove the car to rino ramp and unscrewed the cover (1 screw) to open the cover. The oil drain nut was facint the the passenger side wheel instead of the rear of the car. The drain nut was 17mm (same as my Volvo), and was amazingly "not" tight and "without" a copper washer ????

With the oil filler cap opened, I undid the drain nut and let the "dark" oil came out for about 10 minutes. Total oil that came out was about 6.5 quarts. Put back the drain nut with the copper washer and tightened the drain nut by hand first then wrench. I did not have the torque spec. for the drain nut so I just did it by feel.

Poured in 7 quarts of engine oil from the filler cap and put back the filler cap. I used a 36mm socket to unscrew the plastic oil filter cap. Once the filter cap was out, removed the oil filter element and installed the new filter element. Replaced the rubber o-rings on the filter cap and tightened the filter cap to 25 Nm as stated on the cap itself.

That was it.... Turned on the car and let it run for a couple minutes and checked for any oil leak from the drain nut and oil filter cap.

No oil service light came on and car ran great...... Next oil change will be at 10k miles.

Surely it does not make sense changing the oil without changing the oil filter at the same time? Why have new and expensive oil passing through an already contaminated oil filter?

Just my 2c worth!!

Look up my name and I have a more in depth description of changing the oil and the filter. The next time it is due for my own oil change, I promised to take pictures and add my description. Should be ready in about a couple of months or so. Just had my "first" oil change at the dealer at 12K. Ridiculous, IMHO.

Regards,

Mike

Contaminated by what ? What I saw was the black colored oil coming out of the drain nut. Filter element looked fine, not seeing any metallic particles on the filter paper.

Pipper, if you look at my original thread, you will see that I cut my filter in half and many fine metal particles came out. This is normal, as it tells you the filter stops these. For me, changing oil more frequently than recommended has more to do the acid buildup and oil modifyers, able to continue to do the job they are manufactured to do. Also, the filter does lose efficiency as more particles get filtered by it.

Here is the link to the original thread. Look for my response.

Good Luck!

OK maybe contaminated was a bad choice of words, dirty may have been better.
As Mike said, the oil filter does start to lose efficiency.
Once you are in DIY mode and doing an oil change, take the time to pop in a new filter your engine will love you for it!!
