after removing the unit. splits in two (mark bodies first) i cleaned out the egr with an oven cleaned to see shiny new looking metal, scapped some black muck out with a wood skewer first, oven cleaned 3 or 4 times then rinsed in warm water.

This is great topic since i was hesitating to buy diesel BMW.
I found a 2003 47.000km car hope to buy it.
So will cleaning stop those flaps from breaking?

Cleaning the swirl flaps will definitely NOT prevent them breaking!!!
The only way to be sure is removing them, which is a quite simple procedure and which I definitely recommend to you

This brass and silver rod thing in the EGR, what is it? Does it move in any way? Mine even after a clean still has soot on it and seems solid. Is cleaning the EGR referring to the large spring load flap inside the EGR or this brass/silver rod?

Does disconnecting the EGR vacuum tube cause an Increase emissions error?
I have a different EGR valve then on most of the picture i see here. Mine does not have an electronic connector attached to it.
However, I keep getting the engine icon on my dash with a 4501 EGR error and i can't seem to figure it out.
