I see most reference Long-Life 01 BMW oil spec...and use the 0w40 Mobil 1.

I read elsewhere that Pepboys now sells Mobil 1 5W30 ESP which is Long-Life 04 BMW spec. $7/liter.

Here is the mobil one webpage: Mobil 1 5w30 esp

What is the consensus on the oil used for DIY?

FYI: Mobil 1 website recommends Mobil 1 0w40 for my 2007 550i.

You can't use Long-Life 04 oil in gas engines in North America. You must use Long-Life 01 oil.

Thanks. Yes, I just got a reply on an oil forum that LL-04 isnt recommended with gas that contains ethanol. Rules out US basically.
