My friend's clk got hit by something when he was parked and it scratched the paint off what are the steps and equipment needed if he wanted to fix it himself?

thats a nasty scrape. unfortunately that will have to go to a body shop to get re-surfaced and repainted. if the bodyshop is good they can blend the paint but likely the whole quarter panel will have to be repainted.

Find someone who does "airbrush" work. Like a bumper repair shop. They can blend it so that the touch up will not be able to be seen. I just touched up my rear bumper and side panel (silver gray BMW) using a air brush. Sand lightly with fine grit wet sandpaper (try not to get through the original primer), fill in any nicks with primer and sand. Then air brush the base coat and get a spray can of clearcoat (cut in type) for the finish. You would have to get a pint of paint from some supply source that auto body shops use and of course get the air brush.

+1 for the body shop. scratch looks deep, even dented. Cheapest and easiest way would be to sand down, bondo, sand down again and color match it...good luck...

if he REALLY wants to do it himself, duplicolor makes touch up pens that might make it somewhat passable at a distance after a bit of work
-- if he is going to use one make sure the body is CLEAN of any oils, residue, etc first. Ive used one of these pens on a small scratch before and with a bit of patience it was almost undetectable. this looks much worse tho
i think as others have stated a body shop would be the way to go for good results.
