Does anyone know if it is as simple as adding it to the VO and recoding?
Itīs quite cheap to add when buying the cars new, this made me think if it could be as simple as software addition.

Sorry, i should have explained better
On the F series there is a option where the car knows the speed limit of the current road you are driving on and displays it in the HUD or the instrument cluster, im quite sure i have seen this option in a brochure for the E60 as well.

I think i have answered my own question here, it requires a new interior mirror with a camera for the Speed limit information thing, and i cant find one for the E60 on realoem so i guess that answers all questions

Lots of things can be manually retrofitted that were not originally available for a particular model. If it was available it can probably be made to work.
