I don't want to break anything. I believe its easy. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get my wooden shifter off and put back the stock steel one.

I can confirm that is correct for the auto tranny, nearly hit myself changing mine. But for a manual I don't know. The auto has a catch, the "trigger" you pull to shift gears, that you have to pull hard to over come. Maybe since a manual doesn't have this it just unscrews instead of pulling off.
