Hi,

New to DIY and have some basic - probably dumb - queries on the air-filter (not cabin filter) replacement on my 2006 530xi.

I used this thread as a reference but still request some guidance: https://5series.net/forums/topic/101...xi-air-filter/

1. Am I right that the orange filter, which is easily removable, is the air-filter to be replaced?

2. I ordered a K&N filter from Autohaus (part # 13717521033KN). Is this fine?

https://www.autohausaz.com/search/pr...=13717521033KN

3. If yes to the above, two issues I face when I tried their rust-red filter:

(a) puzzled that its height is less than half of the existing filter. As a result, the K&N is not fitting smug and can slip down towards the bottom because of the space. Is that ok?

(b) when I attempt to close the air box, the lid does not sit properly and I am forced to push it down slightly hard to fasten the metal clasps back. (That wasn't the case with the original filter.) Is that fine?

Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks!

1.) Yes
2.) According to their site its right. http://www.knfilters.com/search/appl...x?Prod=33-2292

A. Filter should fit in the groves in the factory air box. if it falls inside its the wrong filter.

B. If the lid does not seat properly it's not the right filter. It should fit tight but not be forceful.

Check the box it came in and see what part number is on it. Check the link I provided.

Upload some pictures if you can.

Thank you for the feedback. Much appreciated.

Yes, K&N filter box specifes that part # is 33-2292.

On 3a: The K&N filter height is certainly less than half of the original yellow one; the top dimensions are nearly the same and as a result, the k&n seems to fit right for most part but a corner or sometimes a small portion of the side slides does slide down slightly.

To be clear, it is not dropping or falling down in total; at the same time, it is not fitting in smug like the original did.

3b. Lid is now fitting proper; I realized only this morning that I hadn't inserted the bottom portions properly in their slots. Once I fixed that, I was able to juggle the lid to close in tight; clasps are now fastned without any issue.

Will try to load some pics later today.

Thanks again!!

Two pictures - one showing the filter inside the box (poor attempt to show the section where filter is not sitting in properly) and the other to show the difference in the height between the K&N and the original.

Thanks again!

it looks to me like the bottom of the filter, the portion we cant see well in the picture isnt properly in place. pull it up slightly to seat it in properly. hope you get it!

I had attempted to seat it properly many times but felt that it was always slipping in some areas. However, after some time, it seemed to settle in properly and I didn't bother to check again.

Car has a distinctive smooth response.

Thanks for the feedback.
