I've owned the M5 for 5 months now and it was in great shape when I purchased it pre-owned, so I haven't had to do any serious detailing other than keeping it washed clean and waxing it every 6 weeks or so. But after driving it all over the Midwest this summer and fall, the car needed a good spa treatment to prepare for winter here in Chicago.
I did a full-on detailing including washing and claying (2 hours), multi-step polishing (7.5 hours), and laying on protectant (1.5 hours). Whew. (I didn't clean the interior yet ... that's for another weekend).
Here's the tools and products I used. I can't say enough good things about Megs 105 and 205 polishes - they are very easy to work with and they finish off extremely well. Other than dusting from the 105, these polishes are faultless and are easily the best polishing products I've tried.
One before shot: representative of the condition overall with typical random scrapes, some spider webbing, with minimal swirls.
After shot: one round with Megs 105 on an orange pad with the rotary, and one round with Megs 205 on a blue pad with the random orbital.
Some final shots after 2 coats of Zaino Z-5 protectant and a Z-8 wipe-down:
