My Ride: 2005 Jet Black 545i w/ sport pkg, nav, HUD
Default

I did my first detail...I was committed to otc stuff so I used Meguire's swirl x and was gonna follow it up w/ nxt 2.0 wax. Well, I have a jet black 545 and the swirl x was doing ok but not great...i figured if I'm gonna do it, I better go all the way. I went back to wally world and got some meg's Ultra compound. Bare in mind this is my first time using my PC. Well the ultra compound was hard to work with....it was drying too fast w/ my pc and it was very hard to get off. So i switched back to the swirl x which was easy to work with as my wife was already barking at me(going on 5 hours now) and finished up w/ nxt! It's a lot better than before, but there still are some swirl marks. Time got the best of me and I see how it would take a true 12 hours to do it right. All in all I'm happy with my first attempt.

get some solid polishes like Menzerna and you should get some good results.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

^^^ Agreed. Some better polishes would do the trick for you. What kind of pads are you using for this??

I did clay the car before polishing. I used the white ccs pad with the swirl x and grey pad with the nxt wax. I also tried a sample of menzerna intensive polish w the white pad and had similar results as the swirl x. Did i need to use a more aggressive pad?
thanks,
will

With Menz IP, you could use an orange pad, and depending on the amount of pressure you apply, you would probably get far superior results to using ScratchX w/ a white pad.

+1 on using a better polish.

If you are a megs person, try some 105/205. some people swear by 'em

I did the clay, polish, and wax bit with Griot's garage products coupled with their orbital machine and my jet black car came out nothing short of a black mirror.
