My dealer routinely re-sprays high-temperature silver on my calipers and related components due to the harsh winters and car wash wheel solvents. (The dealer actually uses a pretty strong solvent as well.)

The picture of your hub looks pretty much like what my calipers will look like soon.

Although it doesn't look very good, it LOOKS more serious than it really is. I've also had that "rust" color on my rotors on a variety of other cars (especially after the car has been sitting around for a bit after driving in the rain, snow, etc.). To my knowledge, it's not a big deal but if you're really concerned, talk to the dealer about it.

Thanks for all the replies.

Flowerfred, it's on all the wheels.

Rudy, i used Wonder Wheels the few times that i have washed her. Otherwise i use elbowgrease and a wet soapy sponge.

Cheers.

have same thing on my 18" 124 style wheels.....went to dealer who just said it was nothing to worry about and has been seen on a lot of E60's. I asked if there was anything that could be done, i'e recoating that part of the rotor in some special paint etc but answer was no....is this true ? i was considering the old emery paper to lightly remove it, not sure if that would help or make things worse, any ideas ????

I have had this phenomenon for many years on my E46 328i...nothing serious in
my opinion. I car wash my car once a month and they use wheel solvents as well,
BMW said is nothing serious. I even had it my brake calipers...
Solution : twice yearly, when I change to winter/summer tyres and vv. I clean it
up with a light wire brush on site at the tyre centre...takes me a few minutes for
each wheel.. now they're always clean.. Trick is : don't let it accumulate. Good luck

I am a proponent of clear water rinses versus wheel cleaners. This is a front wheel after four months with only clear water cleaning. I don't know how long I can keep it looking like this, but the clear water helps.

I never use wheelcleaners because they make the calipers look rusty. I just use water with a bit of soap. After 2 years my e46 calipers turned black but never rusty..

Right-on.. Hey JDN...Damn, those wheels look good - hope you can keep it up,
mine looked like that only in the beginning - washing by hand every 10 days, then
every month...now the routine monthly car wash... Yep !! time for
a new car - time to get the motivation back - hope it lasts longer this time round
