I decided to put stock airbox on after all the hype with poor performing AFE and was wondering if cleaning the MAF is a good idea. I have not noticed any problems, loss of gas milage or anything but is it recomended periodically to clean it?

If it aint broke dont fix it .

If you did have a need to clean it then I used to use Carb Cleaner on my other cars, I also used to take the maf out of the car completely before cleaning it. You want to use something that will evaporate but also clean.

My 2004 is a while away from needing this done.

My son had an ECU reported MAF sensor fault on his truck (not a BMW of course), so I flushed it with lacquer thinner - no touching, brushing, or rubbing. It has been perfect since then. I suspect his K&N shed some oil on the MAF sensor, so we may need to do it again. At any rate, Bob525D is right. First, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Second, if you do need to clean it, use something that completely evaporates since any residue will interfere with its operation. Finally, do not perform any mechanical cleaning since it could damage the sensor.

I highly recommend it to clean the MAF for every air filter change.

MAF = Mass Air Flow

It senses the amount of air being pulled into a fuel injected engine so that the proper amount of fuel can be injected into the intake charge for an optimum mixture. If memory serves, the actual MAF element is made of gold, and is honeycomb shaped. Cleaning it will ensure that the engine is properly metering the fuel amount.

The RPMs on your truck go up when you turn the heat on because the blower motor draws power from the system, thus taxing the alternator. Many cars are programmed to up the RPMs a little bit to ensure that the car does not stall under heavy electrical load while at idle.
