First of all, thanks to all of you on this forum. I've been researching getting a new car for several months, and all the details, insights, suggestions, and enthusiasm from participants here is contagious.
I currently own a 2001 740i sport and I love this car, but I have the itch for something new. My problem has been that I could not find anything I love to drive as much as my 740. The newer E65 7 series is a different car than the model I own: it's bigger, more luxurious, and while it may be the ultimate driving machine, I don't think it's the ultimate machine to drive.
But the E60 ... well, now that's a driving machine. Wow. I didn't take more than 5 minutes into my first test drive in a 545 to know that this was the car for me. In many ways the E60 545 is the spiritual successor to my 740, and the 545 is certainly superior mechanically. It is a much more capable machine.
But I honestly wasn't completely sold on making a move until I read about all the fun you are all having in your E60s. So now I'm sold.
I can't wait to figure out which options to go for and what the schedule building my new 550 will be. This will be fun.

Have you actually placed an order yet? If so where? I'm also in Chicago and was told by BMW of Orland that they can't take orders because they don't have any info on the 550 yet.
