Sports package was the first thing I told my dealer to mark on the sheet. Without the sport package the E60 is just "The Driving Machine"
I personally like "The Ultimate Driving Machine"
Trust me, you won't regret it.

I didn't get the sport package (but did get active steering), mainly due to my daily commute being on some pretty crappy roads. The standard set up on a 545 is still pretty good, but there is more body roll than I would like on hard cornering. I will probably end up going for the sport next time.

For what it is worth, I found the 545i without sport package to be a very similar car to the Mercedes E500, and would equate it also to the Infiniti M45. With sport package, the 545i is the finest road driving experience I have ever enjoyed. After my several test drives, I could scarcely stand to negotiate with several dealers to get my best price before placing my order! I cannot believe how difficult the wait for my new car is getting to be. In my sleep, instead of sheep jumping over fences I see 545i sports doing slalom runs!
I would not find the 545i to be worth the expense if the sport pack were unavailable; probably would have ended up with the Acura RL. But with the sport pack it is an entirely different automobile. Given that I can afford it, it would be hard to live without the 545i sport!
This is just one man's opinion, and I realize it's very subjective.

It all depends on what kind of driving experience you want, and how much money you want to spend. If you want a pretty fast luxury sedan with a comfy ride, and handling is secondary, I'd say the sport package isn't for you--and probably a BMW 545i isn't worth it either.
For me, the sport package, with the 18" wheels, active roll stabilization, active steering, sport seats, etc., is well worth it to make the 545i about as close as you can get to a 4 door sports car--short of an M5, of course. And from a cosmetic perspective, the 3/4" lowered stance, with the 18" wheels and tires filling the wheel wells, and the black shadowline trim, really do the trick.
I've driven Porsches for over 15 years so I'm pretty particular when it come to driving enjoyment, and the 4 months I've had my 545i w/ sport package have not disappointed.
