It saves you money due the fact the Invoice and MSRP are about 7% less than a US delivered car.

Keep in mind you have to pay for a trip to pickit up. But, if you are going to Europe anyway. It will safe you some $$$.

How do you get a car back to the States from Germany, If you don't mind me asking? Also would it have a German spec?

Is there a secret tunnel under the Atlantic

BMW NA ships it back with all the other NEW cars headed for the States. You drop it off at one of several vehicle trasnport company(E.H. Harms) locations. The Transport company trucks it to the port and it arrives back at your purchasing dealer. The cars is US spec.

European Delivery is a program run by BMW North America to allow US customers to pick up their BMW's in Munich, drive it around for 2 weeks, insurance included, and drop it off in over 15 diff locations all over Europe. Shipping, customs, Insurance and other fees are included in the price.

It is just like buying a car here in the US but instead of picking it up at the local dealership, you have to go to Munich to pick it up. 4-8 weeks later, car will be at local dealership for local delivery. BMW also discounts the MSRP of the car by 7%, M cars not included.
BMWNA also has current incentives for 2 for 1 airfare via Lufthansa. From Jan 1 to Mar 27 2005, BMWNA had 2 free tickets to munich via lufthansa program.

Biggest drawbacks.
1. You have to pay for the car 30 days in advance before pick up, if leasing, 14 days prior, first payment is due.
2. The wait for your car as it is shipped to the US.

You should also work a deal on the purchase price. Some dealers will tell you that you must pay full MSRP for ED. Not so! You can deal just like you do for U.S. delivery. Some buyers claim they get ED cars for $500 over invoice, but I think that $1500-$2500 is more typical. It really pays to shop around. Look up the "Rizzo Method" for car buying on the web. It is probably posted on this site as well. It works.

Thanks for the explanations guys, I never knew that

The savings sound good, the trip to Munich sounds great especially the Autobhan run but the long wait until its shipped back must be torture.

I did ED. Saved a ton on the cost of the car and drove my new car from Munich to Venice to Florence to Rome to Pisa to Nice to Barcelona and back to Nice where we dropped it off at the airport before flying home. A truly memorable vacation.

The only downside was paying for it in June, driving it for only 2 weeks in July and then waiting till September to see it again.

I'll do it again in a heart beat.

How can you really drive the car fast on the Autobhan if you have the break in rule?
