My Ride: Alpine White 2006 530Xi (SLD)
Thumbs up

I don't have MBI on my policy, so I decided to see how much it would cost me to add this coverage. I would never use it for any minor issues - only if the repair bill is seriously in the four-figure territory. Now, according to my insurance carrier (GEICO), it offers MBI only on cars that are less than 15 months old and have less than 15k miles - which is, of course, futile, because ANY car on the market today that is less than 15mo/15k mi old will still be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. This brings up my question: is this MBI coverage a total BS? Has anyone ever used it with any success? In general, please share your knowledge on this issue.

PS Please don't intertwine any info about aftermarket warranty into here - that's a whole separate issue and it has been discussed plenty on this forum.

V did they give you an idea of what it would cost to add to your insurance if your car was eligible?

GEICO should have told you their warranty is good for up to 75k - 100k miles, which is longer than almost any stock manufacturer's warranty.

Unless things have changed.......

I suspect they meant to say that you could only initiate coverage if the vehicle currently is less than 15 months old with less than 15 K miles. Like most mechanical breakdown policies, they won't write a policy on a car that is out of warranty.

If you begin coverage with the car being less than 15 months old and having less than 15 K miles, you will be able to continue it until whatever time or mileage they will allow.
