How prevalent is this little gem? I've just rec'd a quote on soon to be purchased
545i where the dealer claims a $500 MACO "mandatory" fee, dictated by BMW. I've read here that this is not accurate , but who can clarify what the real deal is. Sounds like pure profit to me.

My Ride: 2007 Titanium Gray 550i, with sport, nav, HUD, Logic7, sat radio, cold weather, rear side airbags, rear seat heaters, and it goes like a bat outta hell!

Its a Legit fee... I learned the hard way. After ordering and then right before signing I go WHAT IS THIS!!!!!!!! long explaination and I had to fork out for it. Its 1% of the cars price... so mine came out to be $501. Its an stupid advertising fee that BMW charges each dealer who participates in it. so in other words they have to pay it to BMW and in turn they made me pay it.

Yes, it is legit in those areas where the BMW dealers participate in a shared advertising campaign (although I think some dealers do/can opt out, like Nick Alexander). Anyway MACO (don't know what it stands for) will appear on a car's "Vehicle Inquiry:Wholesale/MSRP" report which your dealer can show you if he/she wants. That means they pay for it and it's not bogus profit. The amount is 1% of the base invoice price of the car.

It's "negotiable.." in a sense... if the dealer wants to take the hit for it.
Basically say the 545 invoice price is $56,000 and $56,501 for those dealers who participate in the MACO ad crap. And you negotiate $1500 over invoice then you expect the price to be $57,500 right?? but to those who participate in MACO its $58,001...
So unless you can talk the MACO dealer to sell you the car for $57,500 which will mean they really only make $1001. so becareful how you negotiate pricing...
I didnt know about the MACO fee and negotiated $2500 over invoice... ordered the car and all that. Then when came time to pay I had to pay $invoice + $2500 +$501!!!!! Because according to the dealer they are really only making $2500 cause they have to pay the MACO fee. I wasnt able to talk the dealer down to taking the hit for that fee... they rather not sell me the car. He insisted that I can walk and they'll keep the car on the lot instead. for $501 I wasnt going to hunt for another dealer and wait another 2-3 months. so I had to pay. Expensive lesson learned. Now be warned!

My Ride: 2004 545i Silver Grey premium sound sport pkg auto trans rear sunshade fold down seats park distance control . Did euro delivery in July 2004. This was second ED.
The MACO fee does not apply to a euro delivery car. It becomes an additional savings over taking a car off the lot in So Cal.
