Hi there,
Just did some quick calculations regarding the benefits of getting a 545 now and ED 550 later. For those of you who like numbers, like me, let me know what you think.
Assumptions
1) 545 CW, Sport, Fld r sts, NAV, sat prep
Total cost $58,465 (assumes $1k over invoice)
Money factor (.001) w/ .60 residual @ 10K
3yr lease with std upfront costs
Lease payment $773
2) ED 550 CW, Sport+Active Steer, Fld r sts, NAV, assumes sat prp incl
Total cost $57,065 (assume $2500 over ED invoice)
Money factor (.00295, .00265+.0003 ED add on) w/ .62 residual @ 10K
3yr lease with std upfront costs
Lease payment $852
The Bottom Line
The big assumptions include getting a 545 at $1K over invoice and dealers only taking ED at $2,500 over ED invoice.
Well, the 550 will cost about $2,800 more over two years in terms of higher lease payments. For this pleasure, I'll get to pick my own color for sure, enjoy +30 bps more power and drive around Europe. However, I'll lose the car for at least for two months. :'(
Conclusion, leasing the 545i now is probably the best call, because the money factor will take awhile to go down on the 550. Not a huge difference in performance, but I suspect the auto mags will finally declare the E60 as tops in its class. The money factors and residuals were equal key in my calculations. Obviously, ED is still a great choice if your looking at only 550.
Let me know what you think.

I think you made some excellent calculations. There's 2 things you need to weigh, which will make you regret more later? The higher payments or the fact that you didn't get the 550?
Personally, for me, I don't think the change is big enough to warrant an upgrade. But if comfort access and the 30+ hp is a must, then go for the ED 550.
If those things don't bother you, go for the better deal, which is the 545i at the moment.

Tomwid,
Thanks. I think the bases were covered in terms of the calculations. Not sure if 550's extra power would be worth $2800 over three years. I'd likely miss the comfort access option (not incl. in cost) the most, as you'll notice this or lack of it every day.
Just emailed my dealer some proposed figures to feel where market is.

I'd miss Comfort Access and 30 extra hp. It's quite a leap especially with more torque. For the case of 530i, I wouldn't trade in for 2006 530 with extra 35hp because the torque are about the same and I wouldn't have a feeling of a strong engine punch.

since the total cost for the 550 is lower than the 545.? have you thought about purchase instead of lease?

The lease has some key tax advantages. My dealer called back @ $2.4K over invoice, about $820 per month. If I can't do better, ED is back in the picture.

you'll definitely get the advantages if you can write off the tax. i think $47/month is not that big of a deal and i'd go with the 550. if the dealer can lower it to $800/month, even better
.

oh, you are right. i was only looking at the monthly payment but forgot about the amount over invoice
. even $1,500 over invoice is fair but since it's a "new" model, i think it'll be a little tough for you to get
.

Get the 550. You'll quickly forget about the extra payment, and you'll never have to think "what if I had gotten...".
The 550 will really be an awesome car - right up there with the E39 M5 in terms of power and handling. You'll be driving it for 3 years - go with the best you can afford!
