Heres a thread of people commenting on the "only 130hp" seperating the M5 and 550.

From the m5board,
No offence to anyone here who drives one, but that car is not a performance machine. It's 'kinda' fast and it handles 'kinda' well it's also 'kinda' soft and 'kinda' budget minded. Don't get me wrong it's faster, smoother, sportier and more luxurious than 95% of the cars on the road, but to drive it... comperable qualities could easily be found in Acuras or Chryslers for the same or less price. Driving the 545 is like typing with supple leather gloves on - feels great, looks great and certianly get's the job done in style, just doesn't work if you want to go fast.

Gosh, kinda harsh.

That guy is obviously talking out of his @$$. But hey, one man's budget machine is another man's 4 door Ferrari. To compare to an Acura or Chrysler is just ignorance and/or arrogance

Tried to order a 545i with a production date of after 9th week (second week of March 2005) and my Canadian Dealer just phone me back saying that the 545i is being discontinued and I will not be able to order that car with that engine.?

The 545i, so he tells me, is being replaced with the 550i, but he does not yet have the pricing on it.? The build date for this car in Canada would? be no earlier than April.? The 550i will be known as a 2006.?

On another topic, he said that ED needs 6 month lead time, can anyone confirm?

Finally, that pre-wire for Satellite and NAV can't be done in the 545i, can anyone confirm?

Now I need to decide "Do I still order the 545i or not?" and what kind of discount should I get for ordering a car with an engine that is being discontinued? :'(

Definitely order the 550i. Please ask your salesman if the 550i will be available in the USA this fall too and let us know.

Mark, I never got to ask him about the USA as we were negotiating on a price, got to $2000 separating the two of us, and I call it off because he wasn't willing to move any more ...

There will not be a 550 in April.

Agreed.

Why would BMW introduce a new V8 engine in the e60 in Canada before it introduces this model in Europe and/or the US (two of its largest markets worldwide)?? More importantly, from a product differentiation viewpoint, why would BMW introduce this new V8 engine (non-Motorsport engine) in the e60 before (or at worst, at the same time) it launches the engine in the flagship 7 series??

If there is a 550i to be sold in Canada prior to its availability in Europe and/or the US, it may simply be a "renaming" of the model for the Canadian market without any substantive changes to the engine (i.e., you buy a "rebadged" 545i that is sold as a 550i only in Canada).
