I've been a longtime lurker. Great forum...

I've had my 545 for 11 months and it's been in the shop for 43 days.
- iDrive frozen (won't reboot)
- iDrive stays on after car locked
- CCC replaced
- SMG frozen
- Transmission replaced
- Increased emissions 2X
- Rough Idle - valve adjustment
- Window motors replaced
- Moonroof removed and serviced due to hard knocking
- Bad gas mileage
- AM radio distorted

My car is almost 1 year into a 3 year lease. The deal is that BMW will take invoice price of my vehicle and give me any vehicle at invoice. I pay the difference in price. The original lease stays intact with same lease end value, monthly payment and duration. It's called a collateral replacement.

Here's my dilemma: there are no 2005 545's left equipped like I want. So I can order a 550 SMG or manual (production date unknown) and pay the $3,600 difference (including a $1,000 gas guzzler tax) or...

My dealer (Fields in Northfield, IL) has a 2005 645 coupe/manual/sport/Logic7/CWP/SvrGry/Blk/Rutheim/NO SAT which I can have for $10,000 payment up front (invoice to invoice difference). Then, at the end of my 2 years remaining on lease, I can buy the car for whatever the 545 residual was after a 3 year lease.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Any thoughts?

(I rarely use my back seat in 545, so I'm good with a coupe. I'm not crazy about the 5/6 SMG after the much better M3 SMG. I traded away the M3 cuz my wife hated the rough ride and let me know repeatedly.)

That said, waiting for a new 550 or 650 might be a better option?

If you're not concerned about back seat space, nor the price...go for the 6...otherwise 550 sounds great to me...I don't think you'll regret the space anyway. Not that it matters...I just happen to sit in the new 6 at my dealer's showroom...I saw only one cup holder. Where's the cup holder for the passenger? May not seem like a big deal...but I thouhgt I'd note it. Great options nevertheless whichever way you decide. Good luck!

Go for the 550/650, but i would have trouble deciding on an E60 or E63 if i were in your shoes.

Sorry you had such a tough time with your 545.

I would do the 645 if you like the colors and options. Every time I see one on the road it turns my head.

Glad to hear that Fields was fair to you. My 550 should arrive at Fields in 2 weeks (the wait is a killer - another good reason to just get the 645 on hand!). I just hope I don't have a similar experience with all those problems.

Don't fret! My car was a lemon. That's why they replaced it. It's a great car and I didn't think twice about switching name plates. There is no way that every 545 can have this many problems. The torture was driving a loaner for 43 days this year...

Sorry you had issues, but glad at least your dealer is makign what looks like an honest attempt to fix it. I'd also go for the 650, but believe the 550 steptronic does not incur the gas guzzler tax, but either manual or SMG does, if that makes a diff in your decison.

Hello,

A lurker here as I decided on the 911 instead of 545 (still thinking of 550 for my wife). I am just thinking about the financial aspect (Please correct me if I am wrong. I am no expert, just seeing if I could be of help.):

Assume 50% depreciation:

If you are leasing a 50 k car: You pay 25k over the lease period, plus interest on 50k.
If you are leasing a 60 k car: You pay 30k, plus interest on 60k.

In your case:

For this 60k car: You are paying 10k up front, plus 25k, plus interest on 50k. (Less interest, but 35k towards the car, as opposed to 30k. Also, you are only benefitting from the better car (645) for 2 years, not 3.)

Does this mean, that if you are NOT taking this car at the end of the lease, this is NOT to your advantage?

Never mind if money is not a concern. Gook luck however things turn out for you (what a headache you've had!) and if you are already thinking coupe, test drive a 911 when you get a chance. Just kidding, just kidding.

Regards,
Can

Right. The scenario only makes sense if I plan on buying the car at lease end. I do plan to buy it or finance it. My dealer will certify it and sell it for residual on contract back to me.

Take the 550i.

The styling of the 6er reminds me of a Toyota Camry Coupe on steroids ... not a good thing.
