My dealer told me that if the car comes with run flats, it must be returned after lease expiration with run flats. I have no idea if this applied only to my car, my dealer or is a general policy. I have about 12,000 miles on my Dunlop's now and I am thinking of getting a set of Michelins and keeping the run flats to put back on the car when the lease expires.

I asked BMW NA management about this over a year ago and got an official response that BMW requires cars that came fitted with RF tires to be returned at lease end with RF tires.
If an individual dealer lets a customer out of this requirement, that is an exception and cannot be interpreted as any change in the rule.

How much trend is required by BMW on lease turn in? If i buy used I would like to figure out how much tread I would need to go another 10,000 miles and still be safe for turn-in. The car is not drived very aggresively. The orginal tires have latest about 33,000 miles.
As to the dealers, one said exact same and another said depends if they inspect or BMW. BMW financial services said that if run-flat needs to be run-flat and same speed rating. Im just trying to figure out if they enforce it. Thanks for everyones help.

If the pdf that Rudy posted (it is effective Feb 2007) matches current pricing, BMW is charging $250 for run flats, all models. That is a pretty good deal if you can make it till turn in.

The tires are noisy but they have a little over 30,000 miles on them so I think the probably won't be covered. JPL are they 245/40/18 s? I would be extremely interested in buying them.
Wow, I just went on Tirerack.com -- I didn't know they cost that much new! (I usually check non-RF's only for searches). The $250 each from the dealer installed doesn't sound so bad now (maybe they would let you get them now for that price). There are so many better tires for less money in non-runflats.
You should at least try the dealer first -- with that many miles I don't think you would have any luck, but it sounds like other people have been successful (and esp if you will get another car through them it can't hurt to ask).
My wife leases and the tires are usually pretty bad near the end. We got stuck one time for a big bill. Since then I have either replaced early so she gets some use or found used near the end. Her last 2 vehicles have had staggered sizes so I couldn't rotate and I have only replaced the fronts since they were worn the most.

I just went thru a tire situation to get a CPO status. The BMW dealership must put a certain type of tire, with a certain amount of tread on the car to obtain CPO status. The dealer will be much happier if you put that tire on. For my particular situation, it was a very specific run flat from Bridgestone.
That said - To clarify, I have no idea if the dealer will knock you if you have the cheapest tire you can find that passes their minimum tread turn-in standard, but I don't know why they would require it unless it specifically is stated in the contract.
We turned in a Lexus with 45K miles and original tires. No charge for tires - never heard from them again. I'm wondering how BMW would be in a similar situation.

I once wore out a pair in 14,000 miles on a FWD car, in the days when 130bhp was respectable!

I have a 2005 530 with sport package and the lease ends in April. The tires need to be replaced and I was wondering if anyone knew if BMW requires Run-flat tires or not upon turn in. I would rather buy non run flat tires since they are significantly cheaper ($700 less) but if I am going to get charged for new tires when the lease is turned in because they are not run-flat then I will just go ahead and get them. Secondly, do they have to be the same brand tires, Bridgestone or can they be Contintental runflats. Thanks for all the help.
