Picked up my new 545i today. I told the salesman several times, when I go in to sign the paperwork, you better not have any crap added on there. Sure enough, they put the paperwork in front of me, and they have a $249 charge for "glass etching". I didn't even ask. I pointed to it, and said "NO". They tried to speak, I said "NO". This went on a couple of times until the F&I guy left the room and redid the paperwork. Car dealers. Sheesh.
Oh well, car is incredible. What the heck are they going to do with the extra ponies in next year's model? I figure I'll be in jail for speeding before the weekend is up as it is. Good thing I have the best lawyers.

I believe that they etch the vin numbers in the glass windows, etc. as a small deterrent to theives.

basically a bull-s41t security add-on.
thieves can steal a car and then file most of the vin's off.
but if it is embedded in the glass, they have to replace each piece of glass. (way too much work)

the real point here for bmw owners is -- why would you need it?
if they stole a bwm, they have the key.....

Sounds like a complete scam. Why would a VIN number deter a thief who has managed to start the car.

He will be south of the border before anyone looks at the etchings.

No, they don't need the key, but BMW Assist will track the car...

We get that free from the factory here, they even give you the mask incase you have a window replaced so you can have it done on the new one

I love how all these car companies say:

"The key is embedded with a computer chip, so you can't start the engine without it"

Yet it is total bullshit.
