After 2 weeks at the dealership, I finally got my 545 back from valve gasket and timing cover gasket replacement($2700). I drove off and noticed I only had 7 miles to empty(I brought it in with 1/4 of a tank). The mileage gauge was reset. I checked the invoice mileage in/out. They documented that they only put 15 miles on it. the mileage out was not the mileage when i picked it up(mysteriously 25 miles higher). I sent an email to my SA that has gone unanswered. I know it's not that big of a deal, but they pissed me off leaving my car empty, and I immediately knew someone put a fair amount of miles b/c my clutch was lighter. I don't mind necessary test drives, but for gasket replacements??? I don't want any jr or senior grease monkey joy riding my car!!! Sorry..had to vent.

I'm guessing so, but can't that be done at idle?

You won't feel any better until you get some form of satisfaction from this. Contact the SA again and give him a chance to explain. I would contact the GM if the SA will not address the issue.

I agree that 40 miles is a lot of test driving for most repairs. I'd point that out to the SA and give him / her an opportunity to offer an explanation. Your email noting the issue was good - but probably is sitting in some general email in-box.

You should also get a follow-up BMWNA customer satisfaction survey. That might be a good place to make a notation of the "excessive mileage question".

BTW ... what do you mean, your clutch was 'lighter' ??
