extended warranty on a new E60
#1
Hey guys! My first post here I think
I just got a new E60 550i and the dealer is offering two plans for extended warranty:
1. Easy Care Service Contract for 48 mo/100000 mi. which covers major mechanical repairs
2. BMW Full Maintenance Upgrade for 72 mo/100000 mi. which covers maintenance parts
Both of these cost approx. $5100
I was seriously considering getting an extended warranty, but I'm not sure if I need both of these plans at once and the price is kind of steep too. I'm leaning towards the second plan as it will cover most maintenance items, but what about the first plan? Just how reliable the car will be after the initial factory warranty expires?
Thanks for the feedback, oh, and I'm in California if that helps.

I think you are talking about two different issues, maintenance and warranty. The new car warranty covers your car for the first four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The new car maintenance service covers your new car for the same period. They will change oil, filters, brakes, wipers, etc., according to their schedule, which many people do not think is adequate. For example, they will change your oil every 15,000 miles. If you want to have your oil changed more frequently you have to pay for that.
You can extend both the warranty and the maintenance schedule for a fee, as your dealer is offering. However, you do not have to decide on that at this time. You can make that decision any time during the initial warranty period. Ask your dealer for more details before you decide.

Is the warranty 48/100000 total, or 48/10000 beyond the MFG of 48/50000?
I ended up gettting a 7year/70000. I don't put that many miles and I anticipate keeping th car for a while so for me it was worth it.

My Ride: 07 BMW 525i Premium Package, Xenon Lighting Package, manual Transmission. Titanium Grey, 20% Tint around the back, 70% V-Kool on front.
Planned mods: Style 71 wheels with Toyo Proxy 4 tires, Sachs suspension upgrade, upgraded stereo, and many more to come.
you can definitely do better than $5100.
i am in california too (bay area) and i was quoted $3400 for both 1 year ago (7/06), but then mine is a 525i.
the break down is $2300 for warranty, $1100 for maintainance.
i originally bought both, but end up cancelling the warranty. i got a manual so i don't worry as much on the transmission, and the bmw engine seems to hold up ok.
for maintainance, if you plan to keep the car for that long, and that you drive those miles (6yr/100k), i think it's worth it. doing a full set of brakes cost at least $600 or more, at least couple more oil changes, etc. i have 22k miles now and it says my brake has about 7k miles left, so if have replace it at around 30-35k miles, that means i will need 2 more replacement after the original maintainence expires.
for warranty, i don't know... and what i was told is that the bmw warranty can only extend 4/50 to 6/100, any other warranty variation is from 3rd party warranty.

Can you clarify the age of your car? What about the new car warranty? Isn't that adequate?

from the dealer before i went to europe to pick up my car. so the quote is really from may of 06. granted mine is only the 525i which could be cheaper than a V8 550. also, when my friend pick up his 535i from the same dealer, he paid 1400-1500 for the maintainance, saying the 535i cost more, and also the price was raised in general.
i think you should try to get multiple quotes from different dealers, don't think you need to get it from the same dealer! btw mine is from BMW of fremont. is the easy care warranty extends the original of 4/50k to 8/150k?? is it administrated by BMW? they also sell 3rd party one, which seems to be the case for my x5 which went from 4/50 to 7/84k. i guess just want to make sure what's covered and see if the warranty makes sense.
