Hi all,

I'm thinking real hard about ED for 05. Of course I must have all bases covered before submitting the final proposal to the boss. LOL Here are the numbers.

ED Invoice 545i

Base 47,225.00
CW 685.00
Sports 3,005.00
Sat radio 540.00
HUD 910.00
NAV 1,640.00
Destination 695.00

Total 54,700.00

Dealer profit 1,500.00

Grand total 56,200.00

Does this make sense. I know the dealer profit is a key variable.

Yes, that sounds very reasonable. the best I could do was $2000 over invoice here in SoCal last fall. I used the Rizzo Method (FAX) to several dealers. One wanted MSRP, some didn't respond at all, several others asked $2500 over invoice, and my local dealer did the best. I have read of others claiming they did ED for as little as $500 over invoice. Good luck.

CVT, it makes sense, but i've heard dealers are hard to press for ED discounts, but heres a few things to consider...you will make probably 3 payments before you actually get the car, so if you do not have another car, that could be a 2 month problem....i like the ED concept, but the more i crunched the numbers, i came up to the conclusion that the savings are nearly illusional...

for ex...if you buy the car without ED and get $1500 to $2000 above dealer invoice, which is about $4000 off msrp, it works out to basically the same deal without the waiting.... say your car payment is $700-$800/month times 3 because when you ED you have to make the inital down payment (including 1st month) prior to leaving, and then you have to wait about 2 months, theres two more payments with no car, so thats ~$2100 to $2400 without use of the car...plus add in spending money conservatively of $2000 on the trip, total up everything and ED is not such a good deal financially as all would believe on the surface of the numbers....

sorry to all, but i crunch numbers day and nite so I had to figure this ED program out, it just didnt make sense until I did this as see how they are still making out on the deal

Are you also considering that the ED invoice is $3850 less than U.S. delivery invoice? I am not seeing that in your numbers, but I could have missed it. We are looking at $1500 over ED invoice.

It was worth it to me:

1-I am leasing, I signed my lease agreement 3 days before I picked up my car and it took 4 weeks for the car to be delivered to me in the US, so in reality I only paid for 1 month without the use of the car

2-Assuming that I could get $1500 over invoice on a US delivery car, I saved $3665 on the price, but I could not find a dealer willing to give me $1500 over invoice on a US car with exactly the same equipment/color I wanted. The best I found on a 545 was $2000 off MSRP, so in reality I saved $5465.00 on the car

3-The lease is based on my ED purchase price of $53,925, but the residual is based on US MSRP of $61,390. Big savings on monthly payment, lease payment on US price discounted car would be $858.46 vs $682.58 I am paying on mine.

4-I did not spend that much on the trip, but even if I had spent 100% of what I saved on the trip , it was worth it, it was a great vacation and great experience, can't wait to do it again.

Yes, I'm considering it ED invoice with $1,500 dealer profit. Using the wholesale price sheet effective 9/1/04 and adding the options at wholesale prices.

Starting Base Prices

USA port of entry . . . . . . . . 50,940
Munich Pick up . . . . . . . . 47,225
Diplomatic USA port of entry . 48,240

CVTBenhogan, Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I was replying to Casper. I could see by your numbers you already had it. I think Caspers did not.

Hi M630,

I've gone thru similar math (near time value of money stuff). While not a financial windfall, ED has undeniably advantages.

First, simply assume you save 4K. (USA Invoice ? ED Invoice) You have a lower balance/payment say over 5 yrs that maybe saves you $700 in interest. The lead time to finance, some poster say, is just two weeks. If lucky, its four weeks to get the car back to the U.S. A grand total of 1 1/2 of a monthly car payment. The $700 savings helps here. At worst, its two car payments, $1400, which nets down to $700.

Second, while a bummer missing the car for six weeks, no biggie if it?s a long term purchase or lease assuming you have a car to use. Given the thrill of visiting Munich and the factory, any free hotel nights will find the $2000 in spending money more than ample. If really cheap, hop back on the plane and keep the whole $2000.

Lastly, all things being equal, its got to be easier to get a lower figure over ED invoice than US invoice, as ED doesn?t impact the dealer?s allocation numbers. Dealers I?ve emailed have talked about $2.5K under MSRP.

Just my two.5 cents.
