with my 2007 550i now at 54k miles, I had to pay for my oil change for the first time.

Is this a normal charge?

Total is $174.13:

they charge $57.75 to perform a standard scope of the computer to check for faults
$57.75 again for oil change labor
$18.23 for filter
$54 for 6 liters (or qts whatever) of oil
$2.19 for antifreeze

Gave me a -$7.5 discount and I had a valentines (take care of your car....) coupon for -$25.
Then some pay shop charge of $11.55
Sales tax of $5.16

They had the car about 1 hr

Just want to see if this is comparable around the country/area. Granted it is only annually basically, but $174! with $32.5 of disounts! whew.

I would complain. The computer scope sounds uneeded to me. On my old car I had an oil change done on my nickle before the computer said to do it, cost $85 or so... The computer scope is part of the scheduled service and unless your car was due, it should not have been done.

that is a normal charge at the dealer.. of course you can have this completed for cheaper by yourself or with a trusted oil changes place.

you change the oil once a year?

Sounds about right...dealer charged me $130 ish for an oil change on my 545i, and about 150 for the M3...

This is my 2 cents worth.

1. Go to AutoZone and buy the Mobile one Full Synthetic 5 quart oil can for 28.00
2. Buy an additional two quarts for 15.00 because the sump is a 7 quart max volume system.
3. Buy an oil filter for 15.00

Total 58.00 ducks for material and 20.00 for the shop and disposal.

This is what I do. I personally change my own but if you don't, then take it to a shop.

Now, you can stop by a speedy oil place and talk to the manger and ask him if they are competent to do the service on a BMW. He may even do it himself; or she.

The only caution with the my 525 series is the oil filter sits up side down on top of the engine and when you take it off, have a rag handy or else you have a nice big mess on the top of your engine.

Which dealer in ATL?
There are a ton , and there are a bunch of good Indy shops in Roswell and Alpharetta that would have cost less.

i wouldnt just use Mobil 1 fully synthetic, as i dont believe its rated or qualified for BMW you will need the Mobil 1 fully synthetic European Car blend.

SmithsonGA 02-19-2010 10:24 AM

I have used Global Imports. I am aware of the Indy shops.

My BMWs are CPO cars...so I feel comfortable taking them to the dealer for warranty reasons. I could use an indy shop and show the receipts if there was an issue...but that isnt as strong as the dealer doing the work. I dont think it is worth the money saved on DIY if they question it on a warranty claim.

however, I do plan on changing the oil myself in-between dealer changes. I think the 15,000 miles is crazy. When I stated I do this once a year, that is because I dont drive 15,000 in a year.

I will just buy some good ramps and change the oil in=between.

Is it normal to change $60 for a Scope to check for fault codes?? can I refuse that if I have not seen any lights?

This is a standard practice. BMW mandates that they do scope eval for every service. I paid $175 for oil changes.
