Whats the usual rules regarding loaners?

My passenger seat has an electrical fault. Neither the electric seat adjustment or seat heating are working. I have it booked in to get fixed tomorrow but the dealer won't give me a loaner even though the car is under warranty.

Is this normal?

From my experience, in Germany, its possible. My dad needed a new engine with 16,000 km on it (blown headgasket!) and he got nothing...not even a VW Polo or a ride home!

My dealer (S.A.) has always given me a loaner, when i have a scheduled appointment and one is availiable if one is not then he will usually rent me a jeep cheroke or something full size. And if they have to keep the car for longer then he calls me when one of there loaners is returned and swaps me out of the rental if i want to. But i am in the U.S. so i am not sure if there is a difference in customer service there and here?

I had a Mini Cooper S before this car. It was essentially from the same dealership (BMW Munich Niederlassung) but the Mini branch. When the Mini blew a cylinder head I got a loaner (3-series) for 3 days so I am surprised that after buying a 5-series I don't get a loaner.

Someone at my work says its because the car is still driveable.

My dealer offers me to rent a VW Golf for a special price. The first time I didn't realise that I had to pay for the car. I think it's pretty bad service, if its warranty you should get a loaner for free.

To be fair, they did offer to buy me my train ticket.

Here in the States, its the general policy that if you buy/lease the car at their dealership and get service they will give you a loaner. If you buy/lease the car from somewhere else and bring it to their dealership for service you usually will not get one. It a dealer perk, not a BMW NA perk. I usually get a 530ia.

I believe that its at the dealers discretion - My dealer will give you a loaner if you explitly ask when booking a service. Normally this pushes out the appointment time by a week. However - they have recently started trying to charge a small amount per day to cover insurance.

In the US, if you buy from the dealership they will usually provide a loaner (mine uses 3 series and X5). If you bought somewhere else, even a sister-dealership under the same ownership, you are usually out-of-luck. They use this as a selling tool to get you to purchase from that dealership, and to have service done there as well.

...and to be certain of a loaner I discussed it with my salesman before I even got my car...they were happy to oblige.
