When I had the problem, BMW arranged for ZF to come and see me. They plugged their computer into my car and found that I had an incorrect EU version of gearbox software.

It took all of 10 minutes to load the correct version and the problem went away! If it's not software, then again the ZF guy, after demonstrating the problem to him, will be able to advise BMW as to a course of action.

Call ZF UK yourself and find out who is responsible for the BMW account and have a chat with him first.

Good luck

I'll get in touch with ZF directly thanks. This sounds to me like the most likely problem, the car changes gear quite unnecessarily IMO, I don't drive any differently in this car than my last car but I'm getting 30% fewer miles to the gallon.

Oscar,

Can you try another 530dA? A "good" one?

It would be a good start to speed things up before investing time in other areas...

Good luck!

I had a 530d auto touring for 3 days whilst they last reflashed the ECU's which was no different and I've been in contact with several other unhappy customers with the same faults.

Since the dealers (tried 2) and BMW UK say the car is working fine when clearly it isn't. I even had an independant assessment done on the car and that agreed with me "not what you'd expect from a car of this value and marque".

I'm getting more annoyed and frustrated by the day as nobody at BMW wants to know or care it seems.

That transmission "slam" on the auto box seems to be a problem for a lot of people. It's totally unaccpetable. The fuel economy is also terrible for that car. So I have to say I agree with Oscar -- this is unacceptable. BMW has to fix its auto transmission problem.

Telling you to buy a manual isn't the answer, because you should have that choice, and an auto box should work. My wife's 325 (gasoline) has a great auto transmission, so BMW should be able to fix this.

sorry for you man, mine is July 2005 and has 14000+ no probs at all, the consumption is 'cheting' in the city it seems high but once I make teh Autobahn trip it is ok, ours the 'older' version not the piezzo-candle.-) but ok.
NEVER had a prob, in auto, M/S, sport, or manual modes, only sometimes stupid messages: fault transmissio but that was BS, so did not care.

go and see it with your dealer.

I've got a 2004 530d sport auto and I've just picked mine up from a re-code, I am astounded at the difference its made to the gear changes, its like a different car much smoother.

Did you notice any difference after the re-code?

I have a 530d just under one month old with auto box and on one or two occasions ive had instances where the auto box was caught out after stopping at lights after travelling at 40+ MPH. The car would feel like joulting into gear, however I had this on my previous E-Class auto box and the CLK auto box I had before that. It seems like the software cannot cope with every driving curcumstance. As to fuel economy the first few hundred miles the economy was awful at 24 - 25 MPG, however since the car went past the 1K mark its returning 32-34 MPG.
Would I buy the same combination again at this early stage, put simply yes although I would ditch run flat tyres that ruin the ride and tram line.

I never did a re-code...
Since i picked up my car at Germany, i have heard a "gear scratch noise" in the gearbox for 3 times. It is always at about 80km/h in those accelerate->deacceletare->full accelerate moments.
I am going to BMW to report this so that they fix it. What is supposed to happen? Has anyone had this?

Also worth checking that the mpg is not selected to US gallons (can be done in i-drive). Sorry to 'teach granny to suck eggs', but the poor indicated consumption may be down to that simple menu choice (unless you've checked physically using usual methods)

535d at 6000km.
Had the windows anti trap error wich was reset by the dealer but not fixed. Very rarely the windows act but i use only the 1st click on the power windows buttons and close them. So it's ok for me since it happens very very rarely like once a month or every 2 months.

Only once had the transmission slab problem and didn't happen again. At that time i didn't know about the issue so i though it was a rare error fromt he gearbox and for me it seems that way since in never happened again.

About the particle filter i can only tell all the cars equipped with it have the so called "problem". It's normal. I saw it myself when shift point went up a little. Is that really a problem? I mean come on... Also besides the shit points going up a bit there was nothing else i sensed about the cleaning process. What about you guys? Any other noises or special behaviour?

So in the end I AM MORE THAN HAPPY WITH MY CAR. I LUV IT!

PS: My mpg is also pretty low in city drive like 25 mpg tops. (I'm confused on wich mpg uk or usa). It's 13L/100km in metric measurements. But it's ok since it is AN AUTO and a big 3 liter tt diesel and RWD.
Despite all that I LOVE MY CAR!

That's interesting. Any idea which version of software you went from and to? Was it a full CIP upgrade, or just the auto box - I'm not sure if they are bundled together or can be done seperately.
