I was going to post this question in the FAQ's section but for some reason I get a message saying I am not allowed to start a new topic on this forum.

Anyway, I'm interested to know if the chrome ends on the exhaust tailpipes are standard or not? Most cars I've seen do have them (as does mine), but I have seen some without. It seems some of the diesel models with the turned down ends don't have them, but there again I've also seen cars with a "D" badge with the straight out chrome pipes.

Anyone know what the reason is for the variations?

The early diesel engines in the E60's were not euro 4 compliant (no particulate filter), so they had a twin down turned exhaust.

And only admins can start a new post in the FAQ forum -- which is exactly as it should be. The rest of the forums are to be used by us regular folks. Once a question is asked frequently enough, it's up to the admins to add it to the FAQ forum.

(Now if only everyone read the FAQ...but that's a different problem altogether!)

My Sept 03 530d had the non chrome downturned pipes. Much to my annoyance they started doing the straight chrome pipes on the D models just a few months later.

Right sorry, just looked at at your signature. My bad. You were saying you have a turn down pipe and when I look at your car is stright. Haha... got me confused

exactly correct, early 2003 diesel cars had downward facing tail pipes due to the emission and smoke thing, now we are all straight

Thanks guys - it is all clear to me now why some were chrome and some were not. (Although I'm still not sure why the early models had to have the pipes turned downward - to protect pedestrians from getting gassed by the fumes or the people sat in the traffic jam behind them?)
