I was wondering since I jhave a No-Limit Platinum AMEX card if it's possible to purchase a car on it for and pay it within the 30 Day period? I ask because I want to buy an M5 and use the purchase to get me closer to the spending requirements of the Black Centurion Card. Does anyone know for sure? I asked a dealer once and they said no because they get a percentage charged back to them but I figure If I pay that chargeback why not?

AMEX may let you but I doubt the dealer will. Most dealers don't like to take more than $5,000 on a CC. They will get upset about the 1.5% they miss out on by customers using the card. I wanted to get the miles on my Amex a few years back but the dealer I was using didn't let me do it.

The following thread may be of interest to you "Don"...

It's likely that you won't have that problem with AMEX though.

Things to consider:

1. There are no centurion accounts being set up right now as the program is in question.

2. You didn't need to spend like an oil baron to get on allocated - just hit the right profile milestones (be seen to travel extensively, pay before the statement issues, keep spending at a regular level month after month etc.)

3. Black cards are getting thown back in legion at the moment as they are bad value for money. You get most of the benefits from your platinum card without the extra grand a year in charges just so you can wave the card. I for one have dumped mine.

4. If the dealer were to agree who's going to cover his merchant charges?

Have fun but don't get hung up on the black hype.

You should be able to buy anything with credit card. If the dealer accept cards to begin with as they do ofcourse then per any merchant agreement, a merchant can not add any surcharges or refuse to accept a customers payment because it's done by credit card. This surely applies for VISA/MasterCard and most likely for AMEX/Discover also. I don't think that there's some special exception to that rule for large amounts.

Although I imagine instead of adding a surcharge they could just give you a "worse" deal or charge extra for other stupid things to make up for that but not if you've got the numbers all worked out beforehand and are ready to pay.

So what happened? Did you ever purchase the car on the Platinum card? And did AMEX ever invite you to join the Centurion club?
