I was going to go for the extension on the warranty for $3,000 or so, but the car has been so trouble free I wonder if I should, or just take my chances and self insure, so-to-speak. The extended maintanence is a no-brainer and a great deal, what with the cost of maintanence of these cars. Just a brake job alone is over a grand, so I will go for that for sure.
For those with more than 50,000 miles at this point, the question is , how is your 5 series holding up after you hit the 50,000 mile mark? Any costly problems? The big expense of course would be the tranny. Any problems with that? What about the Cat. Converter?, another big ticket item

It's a crap shoot. If you're keeping the car and you have the 3k to spare, I say go for it. It's peace of mind knowing whatever happens you're not going to take a big hit. GL

You do have to realize the maintenance is SCHEDULED. If for some reason your brakes wear out faster, they won't replace it. They'll wait for the light to go on or the recommended mileage.

Well, the light (e.g. for brakes) will go on when the wear sensor says so. So, independently of whether your brakes wear out "faster", they will be replaced.

My car has 25k miles, and has only had one service so far; even at the extortionate cost BMW charges for service, I'd say it's hardly worth it.

Not necessarily. My sister's 330 rotors and brakes are completely shot. The light isn't on.
