I took my 535i to the dealer last Friday for CEL (bad oxygen sensor and DME recall) and I got a 2011 335d as a loaner...

First impression - it felt much cheaper than my car, looked really plain inside . I love the exterior, however, interior...was not even close to my 535i. I thought "I want my car back right now!"

Now to the good part - the diesel engine :notworthy: . Well, the torque is crazy :notworthy: .... it has so much of it, I could not stop WOT it every time I drove it. It is just too addictive. It sounds and feels like V8... I thought my n54 was amazing engine, but this diesel.... if there would be e60 535d I would seriously consider it. Driving it on the highway at ~60mph I was averaging 45mpg, overall had 28mpg (300 miles). And I was "really enjoying" the car... I do not push 535i and barely average 21mpg. So when SA called today and said that my car is ready, I waited till before they close before I returned the car. Now my car feels "slow"..... I will miss that raw punch ... I am in :heart: with diesel :whistle:

I can't believe I took the time to write this but I had to share. If your dealer has 335d as a loaner, I would recommend it... Just for fun :whistle:

I've been always saying that. These V6 diesels have a brutal torque. They also sound and feel great, push you to the seat. I guess most of the diesel haters haven't really tried one in the last 10 years. The only reason I switched to petrol engine was that I didn't like how much time it takes to warm up the heavy steel diesel engine on my short routes.

My 540i 225kW feels the same (or maybe even slower) than 330d 150kW, even if it's actually much faster. But the other thing is, 5er is much more comfortable.

By the way, there is a E60 535d LCI on the market with 2 turbos.

When I bought my E60, I testdrove a 523i and 520d.... that diesel torque is what sold me.

But for the first week or so, I kept looking around for that 'truck' I heard every time I
stopped at a stoplight... Took me a while to figure out I was the truck! heheheh

Well, the only V-block engines there is are V8, V10 and V12 in BMW´s :). So, every BMW 6-cylinder engine is : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-six_engine

And the only V-block diesel version is 740d, I´m not sure if you have it in US. Anyway, the torque is the thing in diesel engines combined with low consumption. Mine is upgraded +20% power and torque and the rear tyres must be changed every 15k km / 9500 miles :). My 530dA has 190kW/600Nm.
All x35d´s have twin turbo with R6. There´s also 4-cylinder twin turbo, 123d. Well, atleast in Europe...

The new generation of diesels that they are putting in cars these days are awesome. I had an X5 3.5 d loaner for a while and even in that car the torque was addictive. I would love to see the new BMW diesel (4.5?!?!) put into the F11 with X-drive. I love the torque a diesel engine has and I think that if more people would test drive them they would buy them. To me, diesels are a much better way to improve fuel economy and performance than hybrids. While hybrid technology is great, diesels almost get as good of a fuel economy and don't have battery packs which are not very environmentally friendly.

the only thing wrong with the diesels apart from the noise, is that the engine weighs a ton, it's like driving around with a small horse tied to the front of your car, the handling is too lazy. i've owned two e60 530d's both of which were re-maped to almost 535d specs. now i've a n52 530i and do i miss the torque? do i miss the wallowing front end? .....no way, i'll take my 530i anyday. If you want to save money, drive a nissan.

There is an e60 535d, although it probably won't be as quick as a 335d due to the weight difference.
