I just talked to my dealer about the schedule for knowing more details on the 2006 550 and M5.
He thinks he should have information on available colors and equipment options in about 4 weeks, which puts it at mid-July. He figures there are a lot of 545s still out there and BMW will keep the new information tight until the stock is down. Also, he expects that this info will need to be known in time to place orders by the end of July for September 1 production starts.
After that, he figures base prices will be out a few weeks later, in August, and that pricing for optional equipment will know by Sep 1.
I'm starting to think about the M5. I figure the price of a fully loaded 550 - including adding on the M-Kit and some M-style wheels - will be more than $70,000. If the M5 is priced in the low $80s, well, why not go all the way? I'll have to wait longer, but it would be worth it.

Funny cause I've thought the same thing. I figure if I get a 550i it's also getting some 20" Lowenharts, $5k-$7k in stereo, Hamann kit, etc, etc. I'm sure I'll have spent $80k all said and done. I'm just not sure how long the wait would be to get the M5.

Well, my sales guy said that while they have a long wait list now for the M5, he figures 30% will drop out when it comes time to pony up the cash. Given that, he figures he could have me in one by the end of this year or early 2006. This may be a bit optimistic (hey, what else would a sales guy say?).
I'm going to wait and see what information is available next month on the 550 and go from there.
Either way, how can we lose?

I just want to see all the options and minor changes as well. The push button starter is interesting to say the least. Comfort Access sound cool too.
I would try and save up the extra dough for an M5, but am afraid the wait is into late 2006. I wonder what the allocation will be? 1 Car a month for each dealer? If that was true, how many BMW Dealers in the USA are there?
Does Canada and Mexico count against our allocation, as in BMW designates so many for North America.
Guess we will see.
Regards,
Michael

Plus, I don't really think the M5 and 550 are true substitutes for one another, even if the 550 is comparable in price to the M5 after mods, etc. Just the EPA gas mileage will cost you more in out of pocket $ than the M5 over the life of owning the car ... and then there is the first year teething problems that the M5 will no doubt encounter (incl. the oil pump issues that the Euros have been dealing with).
Still, if you've got the patience and extra cash lying around ( ) I say go for it. You only live once.
