Why in the world would BMW discontinue SMG??? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me - especially when the 7 speed SMG is the only transmission offered on the M5.

Anyone know what's up?? Does BMW have a DSG transmission in the works?

SMG stays on the //M cars in the USA

The new ZSG ( bmw's version of Audi/VW DSG) is comming out mid next year in europe with the 335i, but its apparently not slated for //M cars

How does that 5.6/5.7 0-100 time compare with the 545 and M3 mfg spec's? I have the 545 manual and it claims 5.7 0-60 mph. Not sure if they just substituted the 0-100 kph number here. 5.6 0-100 kph should give 5.4 0-60 mph. If it's a .3 sec improvement, that's very very impressive.

So my big question: Will BMW change to the ZSG on the M cars in the near future, or will they stick with SMG? Sounds like eventually, they'll convert to a ZSG type system.

Originally 0-100 was listed as 6.0 (for the manual). After the new engined 530 and updates to brochures, it was listed as 5.9 sec. So 5.6 sec is a pretty significant improvement. Given that BMW is quite conserative with published figures, I think actual test number may be around 5.3-5.4 sec. Also, since 0-100km/h is actualy 0-62mp/h, the US number should be just a shade over 5.0 secs for 0-60mp/h.

SMG (and its eventual variants, SMG II, SMG III, etc.) will remain an ///M staple.

ZSG - with its dual-clutch technology - has been determined by BMW and the ///M division not to be suitable to maximize performance.

ZSG is supposed to "fix" what is currently the biggest complaint about the non-SMG setups -- e.g. the herky-jerky and sometimes very slow shifts, especially downshifts.

Take it for what it's worth, who knows ...

The USA SMG information is only being posted by Non-USA members. Can anyone from the USA contingency confirm this speculation?

If you go to the BMW USA website ( www.bmwusa.com ) it list the SMG transmission as an option on the 2006 530i. The 545i is being shown as a 2005.
