I guess that with all the exotics (Lambo, Maseratti, Ferrari, etc), BMW, Audi and now the motorcycling world offering a SMG like transmission option, I don't see this as a passing fad and feel that this will go more mainstream.

Motorcycles are true sequential transmissions, the E60, M3 and Z4 are not. The new M5/M6 are however.

I dont know if sequential is the right word to use.. but the M5/M6 gear shift pattern layout is not triditional...
NOT
1 3 5
2 4 6
but is somthing like
R 1 2 4
7 6 5 3
its odd... I'll have to look for the pic.
here is it...

Sequential, as it relates to a tranny, means that you MUST go through each gear to get to the next one. Autos have designs that let you go from 1st directly to 4th, 3rd to 1st, etc. A sequential is like a motorcycles transmission, in order to go from 1st to 4th you must go through 2ndf and 3rd. BMW's act like a sequential because of the electronics but the actual tranny is a typical 6-speed and not specifically designed for SMG. The external shifting mechanism was designed to work with the traditional tranny. In the new M5/M6 I understand the tranny was designed from scratch to be a sequential unit, thus making the electronics/hydraulics simpler.
