Can you imagine if BMW had these many defective cars? People would have wanted BMW's CEO's head on a platter.
Let me be the first to say: Toyota SUCKS!!!!!!!!

Never really thought much of their cars anyway. I drove a Camry recently as a loaner and it was as poor handling as my 78 Camaro if not worse. I looked at the suspension and it was sub-par. The old adage, you get what you pay for.

I guess no one really cares about low-end vehicles when they own a much better brand.

You can bet the Toyota owners would be all over us if BMW were to make a product or products as bad as Toyota makes now.

It's not just the pedal but now the ECM and the frame rot issues on the Tundra and Tacoma trucks as well as the malfunctioning brakes on the Prius.

For me, it's all pretty shocking. First of all, people are losing their lives over this, so it's damn serious. It's hard to make light given that. Second, I used to own a V8 4 runner. I loved that truck and it was a good dependable SUV, though for a V8, severely underpowered. I never had one complaint about it (other than power)....I just changed the oil and maintained it. It was just the general public perception that these cars are dependable and long lasting. They will take a hit for this, as already seen in sales figures for December and January.

Just because Toyota having recalls doesn't make their cars less reliable. Every car company had recalls at one point. And those fatal cases are mostly human error anyway. I work with toyota cars and some of them have 400k miles on the clock. Just changing oil, brakes and tires. Show me at least one BMW that can compete.

Someone said about handling. That car was made for simple cruising. Why compare with sport sedan like BMW. Camry costs 3 times less and lasts 3 times longer. I am not one of their customers because i prefer performance. But those who are after quality, Toyota is a choice. And they never introduced Camry as "sport sedan"

It is interesting to see how press can influence people's opinion.

Vlad has it nailed. Toyota is in a mess more because they didn't get this fixed more proactively, once the government and the media gets involved, things always snowball just as they have here. Their mismanagement of the issue here is absolutely related to their media strategy, rather than their engineering. BMW is not without sin let us not forget, the HPFP and diesel swirl flaps being just two examples, plus at least one potentially massive issue a couple of years ago relating to airbags that would not deploy in the event of a crash. In future business school classes Toyota's predicament will be taught as a lesson in media management, it's really nothing to do with the engineering.

what would be the benefit/point of "bashing" a company (Toyota)?
