Ok Guys (and gals if any <_< ) after a long hard look around I have short listed the Volvo XC90 as I need 7 seats and dont want a people carier. The XC90 is just about the only 4x4 with 7 seats and a "respectable" image.

The New X5 will have the 7 seat option but I can't stretch my budget to that unless I sell my 535d (NO WAY will I do that )

Wanted to know if anyone has an XC90 or has owned one and what they thought - cheers

been driven in one... slow as hell, interior trim is below BMW standard but is ok nevertheless. AWD works great though

Mrs. Tachyon just turned in her leased XC90 ... she opted for a Cadillac SRX this time. It was her 4th Volvo and she just wanted to do something different this time.

The Volvo was a very nice machine. We had no problems at all with it outside of regular maintenance. It was comfortable, drove well, and actually had decent mileage for such a large beast. The Mrs. is very hard on vehicles, and the Volvo held up very well over 45,000 miles.

It's a good choice.

It's slow as hell... My friend has one... we both hate it.. the only good thing about it, is that it is one of the safest SUV's in the world.. so for transporting kids and the rest of the family it's the best choice...

Thanks for the feedback so far - speed is really NOT an issue as I have my 535d

What I really fear is the reliability of these vehicles - have heard a lot

The car is for the wife so again speed is not the issue.

Doesn't that depend on what engine you opts for? The 3.2 and V8 are not that slow.

It's like saying a 5-series is slow as hell and referring to a 520.

I think it's a nice vehicle. I'm not very fond of the light steering.

Sister in law has one. Been in it and driven it many times. Great hack car at the price. She has the six cylinder, power is okay, fuel economy around town is bad, too big around town too. Drives okay for a tank. Build seems good. Very upright and not that comfy for tall drivers. But if you need a 7 seater and an okay AWD system, a pretty good choice especially in the diesel which is far more frugal at the pump. Have a look at the Land Rover Disco. Serious 4WD at about the same $$$ and also 7 seats. (also a tank)

What about the Mazda CX-9, the Saturn Outlook, or the Mercedes GL320/450?

Recent C&D lists them in the following order

1. Acura MDX
2. Cadillac SRX
3. Lexus 470
4. BMW X5

It's pretty descent. My neighbour has one with the new 3.2 engine - refined, quiet and smooth on the highway. We used it to haul my new garden furniture - heaps of space ! - I liked it.

It's a safe buy.
