My Ride: 2005 545i, Orient Blue, Black Interior, Sport Package, Satellite
I owned a Lexus before test driving the 545i and then the M45. If the M45 was better, I would have bought that. The M45 sucked ass in all aspects of performance and handling compared to the 545i. All those magazines and their point-by-point comparos can go pound the freaking Sahara desert for all I care. I will continue to claim that the M45 sucks ass from now until the end of time because of MY personal experience.
So how do you really feel?

My Ride: Arrived 3 June 2005: 2005 545i - Orient Blue, Black interior, Sport, Steptronic, Cold Weather, NAV, Sirius, Logic7, Comfort Seats, Sunshades. What a glorious ride!
Let's say for a minute that the e60 did not exist. What would I have bought? Not the M45; I think the Acura RL is a far superior car. Much more precise handling, much classier interior, better audio, quieter, better ride. The M has a few more "tricks" and much stronger acceleration off the line, but that's about it (for me). And it falls WAY short of the 545i.
Not bashing the M, but it is in no way a vehicle that I would dream of owning. A very nice car that inspires no particular passion. Just my opinion, of course.
As for passion, my 545i has it in spades. Best car I have ever owned by a factor of at least 3. (Second would be my gone but not forgotten 1996 Taurus SHO - what a beast in sheep's clothing! A shame about that stupid camshaft sprocket that led to unpredictable catastrophic engine failure.)
Yeah, guess I have no clue what handling is. Guess that's why I picked the 545i sport. <_<

RL chassis is weaker than both M45 and 545i. Handling is not as precise as the M45 sport nor 545i sport. The grip is also no match for either.
M45 with rear steer has same grip as the 545i sport.
The only true statement you made is that RL rides better.
M45 is a huge step above the RL. Just a little behind 545i in terms of steering response. But overall handling of M45 is on par with 545i sport.
Just because you choose a 545i sport does not mean you know what handling is.
Heck, I have owned two M and one other BMW and is expecting another M in nov/dec. I still wouldn't say i know everything about handling.

The M45 is just butt ugly.? Inside and out.

E60 without M sport body kit does not look that hot either. In fact it looks like dopey.
E60 front end is not really pleasing to look at without the M5's front bumper.
The rear i do like it more than M45.
Interior wise, i found both to be good in different way.
Take a shot from the front end, especially the 3/4 view. The head light is dopey.
It looks someone is still half a sleep.
