I only got to test drive a 2007 M5, and let me say that I am simply in love. It was everything I thought it would be and more.

Does anyone know what the best aftermarket warranty is that bmw dealerships will honor? Any idea how much a fully comprehensive one would cost? 3500?

It looks like I will be getting either a lower mileage 2006 or higher mileage 2007.

The M3 is still in the mix but right now the M5 is the priority assuming I can find the right one.

The sound of the V10, the handling, and the SMG is just blissful. The interior was astounding as well. It really is the ultimate driving machine.

My only gripe is BMW turn signals suck and the SMG was not as fast as I anticipated, but I probably just wasn't use to it.

Only one comment VTGT - if you don't at least test the other cars on your final list you're shortchanging yourself. The M5 is a great choice, but you had others on the list that are also fantastic cars - more capable than the M5 in some areas, less capable in others, and only way to tell if those differences are important to you or not is to get out and take a drive...

Yes I agree with the 550i or the M5!

Because you've got kids etc, so the 5 Series range sounds very logical and the abovementioned two cars are the highest powered cars available! Besides F10 is coming very soon, so I'd assume you'd be able to get good pricing for the 550i or the M5!

You're in VA ... no going fast anywhere except maybe at 3:00AM on a Wednesday.

The BMW 550 is very comfortable, somewhat reliable, and won't embarrass you on the road. That said, the road-worthiness of the Audi Quattros is very appealing if you need to deal with bad weather. Or, if you have the ability to choose when you drive and don't have to when it is snowy/icy. The BMW with a good set of Winter / AS-Tires and driven competently will get you from A to B.

I see your choices are all pre-owned. There are some good deals out there but I'd want the protection of plenty of Factory Warranty and Certified coverage offered by BMW, Audi, & Mercedes.

Repairs after warranty will definitely be expensive because unlike most Subaru's, these cars break

Couldn't agree with you more... before the current E60, I used to drive a Toyota LandCruiser Sahara and reliability for the latter was much better!
