My vote would be for a CPO 2007 M5! It is truly a best of all worlds car, class, performance, comfort, reliability and undeniably SEXY!
Get one and I defy you to wipe the smile off of your face!!

I voted for the M3 ... and I will explain that in a moment.

But first - do not buy a 2008 550i Sport. Two reasons: you will immediately regret not getting an M5; and you will soon (~6 months) see the F10 550i on the road and you'll be drooling over that too. I can vouch for the 550i-regret-not-getting-M5 thing ... see sig below. As soon as I bought the M5 my first reaction was ... why the f#@k did I wait until I was 50 years old to gat a M car. What an idiot. Kid, don't make that mistake - go get an M!!!

Look, the 550i is a very, very good machine, but because it is so effortlessly capable you will soon be bored with it. And you will continually ask yourself that if the 550i is this good, how good can the M5 be? The answer is that the M5 is astoundingly better ... in every way imaginable.

So I think the M5 is a very close 2nd-best choice for you. #1 is the M3. Why? The M3 has a better cost curve than the M5 - meaning that the M3 will be less costly to maintain and will likely hold its value far better. More importantly, the M3 is the better driving machine. Motor Trend says it's the best all-around car on the planet.

I recently spent a day at the BMW Performance Driving School in the M5, M6, and M3 - and I was blown away by the M3. Not only does that V8 sound absolutely marvelous, but it clearly out-handles the M5. It's a much more toss-able car than the M5 and is mostly just more fun to drive, especially in every-day driving conditions. I would say that the M3 is a better driving machine than the M5 in every case except high-speed acceleration - as in jumping from 90 mph to 150 mph ... and how often will any of us get to test that theory?

I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs and I found the M3 to have plenty of room for me. The seating position in the M3 seemed to be every bit as accommodating as the M5 ... it's a very familiar place. And since you don't have to haul around a family yet, you don't really need the little extra room the M5 provides.

You're a young guy and the M3 is targeted for you. But I don't think you would ever regret getting either M.

Good luck and keep us posted on your pursuit.

Thanks for the full recap!

The more I think about it the more the M3 makes sense. More warranty and free maintenance, and more fun car to drive when the road gets twisty.

I am trying to figure out if I want the M3 Sedan or Coupe.....I like the sedan because it is more practical and more rare (at least around here)

Right now my priority list looks like this: M3, RS4, M5.

Why is it so hard to rank those three.......I guess I cannot really make a bad decision

Go for the M3 if you not planning to have kids yet, then change to the F10 M5 when you have kids

That sounds like a good plan to me, I do not see any kids in my immediate future (>=5 years) <knocks on wood>

It would be nice to keep the M3 as a dedicated weekend/track car, and then have a X5 M for the daily duty

But then again I could also get a 2005-6 911 Carrera 4S and do the same thing.....

That looks really awesome.

Right now I keep going back in forth between 2008 M3 and 2006 M5. The perks are that the M3 is probably more fun and will have a lot of warranty and free maintenance time left. But I just do not want my back to hate me for choosing the M3. The M3 does not have an option for comfort seats does it

I guess I could get a 2007 M5 CPO but they are pretty rare and are a lot more than a 2006 M5.

Decisions decisions.....

Wow, sounds like a fun day. Can I trade days with you?

My guess is that you'll find the 911 the most fun to drive with the M3 a close second. And I bet you'll be astonished by how fast the M5 is at speed. I am guess you will like the 550, which does everything well, but is not as fast as the M5 or as tossable at the M3 or the 911 or M3. The more I think about it, if I didn't need the extra room of the 5 Series, I'd get the 911 or the M3. M3 is a lot more practical because it has a full sized trunk.
