GT-R, The real hp numbers.

Ever wondered why such a heavy car is beating cars with more power and less weight.

Because Nissan is lying about power output.

See for yourself:

Yep it explains everything.

It is not because of the "magic" awd system.

It's "Under-rated" just like what BMW does.

Heck i was surprised that the 535i was making more HP.

Like the guys in the video said, 15% driveline losses on a 4WD car is conservative, its more like 25%. So if their estimate of 550hp is true, Nissan is understating by 70hp. Well then, I guess it ISN'T the greatest thing since sliced bread. The 4WD system isn't magic by any means, but in terms of designing it for low mass and packaging it in the space they were given, it is a pretty slick design (Borg Warner worked with Nissan on the design/development of it).

I was also very surprised, and it was quite a pleasant one. But underrating horsepower is nothing new for automakers in Japan due to the 'gentlemens agreement' they have with the government regarding how those vehicles are taxed... Not sure about it, but look at the Lancer EVO and Subaru WRX, I dont know if they are even close in their hp output to what the manufacturer actually states.

Imagine that skyline is making that much HP at stock boost configuration?

You quoted the slowest tested trap speed for the GT-R. Thats why ignored that post. Every other test has the GT-R's trap speed much higher than that. The same mag you referred to, tested the GT-R a month earlier and got 4+mph on the trap speed. Also like you said that GT-R they had was thrashed by every mag.

Here is an excerpt from article I read a couple weeks ago.

"It's algebra: If you know your car's eight, and you know the speed it reached in a quarter-mile, you can pretty much predict the amount of power required to produce that trap speed. Trap speed doesn't lie. And the GT-R' trap speeds give lie to that 480-horsepower rating.
The GT-R can hit 122 or 123 miles per hour in the quarter-mile. It weighs about 4,000 pounds, with driver. There are many calculators and equations devoted to divining horsepower numbers, and given this weight and trap speed, most of them peg the GT-R' output between 550 horsepower on the conservative end and 580 horsepower on the maybe on a cool day with a tailwind side. But I would eat my time slips if this car doesn?t have at least 550 horsepower.
So why won' Nissan just fess up? Maybe it' for insurance reasons. Maybe it' to appease the Japanese government, which regards the GT-R as a pavement-eating menace to civilized mankind. Or maybe it' because it' just more fun not to know. It adds to the legend. Because when someone asks you how much power your car makes, hard stats are boring. It' much more entertaining to say, 480 horsepower, officially, then, in a conspiratorial tone, confide, but everyone knows it' got more."

Fact is dynos are proving this car is rated well above 480hp and it does explain a lot of the numbers we have seen. Soon owners will put their cars on the dyno and we will have even more proof. Never said it was a bad thing, hell more hp is a plus.

And all the articles that pointed to the work Nissan did to use lighter weight materials. Imagine if they didn't do that? It still might be a pretty fast car with all that power competing maybe not with Porsches, but with some respetable cars just the same. And there is a Spec V version to come, could this thing get any crazier?
